Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) Stretching in Westminster

If regular stretching gives you a little relief but the tightness always seems to come back, there may be more going on than simple muscle stiffness. Sometimes the muscles and nervous system need a different kind of input before movement starts to feel easier.

At Puritz Chiropractic Center, Westminster Chiropractor Dr. Allan Puritz may use Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation, better known as PNF stretching, when limited mobility or persistent muscle tension is affecting how you move. Unlike a basic stretch-and-hold approach, PNF combines stretching with brief, controlled muscle contractions.

A Different Way to Work on Flexibility

During PNF stretching, Dr. Puritz positions the muscle in a gentle stretch, then asks you to contract against resistance for a short period. Once you relax, the muscle can often move a little farther into the stretch.

That contract-and-relax pattern works with the nervous system as well as the muscle itself. The goal is not to force extra range of motion. It is to help the muscle let go gradually and improve how comfortably the joint moves.

When PNF May Be Useful

Dr. Puritz may use PNF when certain muscles stay tight, movement feels restricted, or one side of the body is not moving as well as the other. It can also have a place in rehabilitation after an injury, once the area is ready for more active stretching.

Athletes may benefit too, especially when flexibility affects how they run, lift, swing, or change direction. Golfers, runners, tennis players, and strength athletes are a few examples. The aim is not simply to become more flexible, but to create usable movement that fits the demands you place on your body.

What Happens During a Session

Before stretching begins, Dr. Puritz will look at how the involved joints and muscles are moving. He will then guide you through the contraction and relaxation sequence while controlling the position and amount of stretch.

The PNF portion of a visit usually takes only a few minutes, although that can vary depending on the area being addressed. You should feel a firm stretch, not sharp pain. If something feels wrong, let Dr. Puritz know so the position or resistance can be adjusted.

How It Fits Into Your Care

PNF is often used alongside chiropractic care or rehabilitation rather than as a stand-alone service. Depending on your needs, it may be paired with adjustments, mobility work, or specific exercises.

Dr. Puritz may also show you stretches or movements to use at home. These are chosen based on what he sees during your exam, not handed out as a generic routine.

Move with Less Restriction

If tight muscles or limited mobility keep interfering with the way you work, exercise, or move through the day, contact Puritz Chiropractic Center to schedule an appointment. Dr. Puritz can assess what is limiting your movement and determine whether PNF stretching belongs in your care.
