Electrical Muscle Stimulation in Westminster
Tight, sore muscles can make simple things feel surprisingly difficult. Turning your head, getting out of a chair, or even sitting at your desk can become uncomfortable when a muscle is irritated or stuck in spasm.
At Puritz Chiropractic Center, Electrical Muscle Stimulation, or EMS, is one therapy Dr. Allan Puritz may use when muscle tension is part of the problem. Small adhesive pads are placed over the area, then a gentle electrical current is used to stimulate the muscles underneath.
What EMS Does
The stimulation causes the muscle to contract and release in a steady rhythm. This can help a tight area settle down, reduce spasm, and encourage blood flow.
For some patients, EMS is used before an adjustment because the muscles are simply too tense. For others, it may be used afterward if an area feels sore or stiff. There is no set formula. Dr. Puritz decides how and when to use it based on what he finds during your visit.
When It May Be Helpful
EMS may be considered for muscle strains, neck or low back tension, shoulder tightness, spasms, and some sports injuries. It can also be useful when muscle tension is present alongside concerns such as sciatica or whiplash.
That does not mean everyone needs it. If the muscles are not contributing to your symptoms, there may be no reason to include EMS at all.
What It Feels Like
The sensation is usually described as tingling, tapping, or a gentle tightening of the muscle. The setting starts low and can be adjusted throughout the session, so you are not expected to simply tolerate an intensity that feels uncomfortable.
Most sessions last around 10 to 20 minutes.
Part of a Bigger Plan
EMS is usually one piece of care, not the whole plan. If Dr. Puritz recommends it, he will explain what he is seeing, why he thinks EMS may help, and how it fits with the rest of your care.
